Sand in the swimming pool sand filter

How much sand do you put in the swimming pool sand filter? It’s an old second hand unit and the sand is just over half way up the unit. It has never had the sand changed, and must be at least ten years old. I lost maybe 2 cupfuls of sand from the unit when replacing parts, and have also fitted a stronger pump than original.
Now there is lots of air bubbles in the water stream into the pool, but it still works fine except for that. Should I add some more sand ? Read the rest of this entry »
Swimming pool filters

The pressure gauge is just a tool….whatever the starting pressure is when the filter is freshly cleaned, when the pressure rises 10-15 PSI above that you know its getting dirty. An optimal pressure would be 10 PSI but if you have solar,a very strong pump,if its in spa mode,or lots of other reasons it may start out higher and our store we just say when the flow is coming out good and fast then you do not need to backwash when the flow is very slow then you need to backwash. the gauges are a piece of crap and are expensive and they just dont last long at all. all they are good for is to plug up that hole!!!
because if that gauge breaks and you are only looking at that you may not realize if you need to backwash or not.
